"Stories from The Arabian Nights" (1907)

Illustrated by Edmund Dulac

Dulac's illustrations to "Stories from The Arabian Nights" masterfully capture the fantastic elements of the tales through a combination

of brilliantly coloured characters and soft, impressionistic backgrounds while in other scenes, a brooding and mysterious atmosphere is

created through the use of a darker palette.

As noted in "The Dial" (Vol. 43: 1907), the publishing house of Hodder & Stoughton (London) produced "Stories from The Arabian

Nights" for the 1907 Christmas season as a companion volume to "Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens" - illustrated by Arthur Rackham -

that had been so successful the previous year.

The collection of stories illustrated in "Stories from the Arabian Nights" (1907) include: 'The Fisherman and the Genie'; 'The Story of the

King of the Ebony Isles'; 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves'; 'The Story of the Magic Horse'; 'The Story of the Wicked Half-Brothers'; and

'The Story of the Princess of Deryabar'.

The contemporary review from "The New York Times" (21 December, 1907) provides the following description of Dulac's illustrations:

For real charm - a charm quite comparable to Scheherazade's own - this volume depends

upon the indescribably quaint and bewitching illustrations provided by Edmund Dulac ...

The quality ... is best indicated by saying that the color prints give the impression of

mosaics of mother of pearl and rich jewels with the light behind them - a miniature and

sublimate stained glass effect, divorced from the ecclesiastic stiffness of real stained glass,

and made (in the case of the female figures particularly) infinitely graceful, a fit medium for

fairies, houris, genii, goblins, women, and last, but not least, children; admitting, too, of

delightfully humorous effect for all the grace and delicacy of it.

As an exquisite instance of the purely beautiful, graceful, and alluring among the fifty

illustrations in the present volume may be noted the picture representing the Princess in

the story of the Magic Horse reclining Orientally at her toilet attended by her maidens; as

an example of the humorous nothing could be better than the picture which represents

Ali Baba, squat and bearded, returning from the cave of the Forty Thieves with his three

laden asses - "a well-satisfied man".

Cover for ''Stories from The Arabian Nights'' (1907), retold by Lawrence Housman and illustrated by Edmund Dulac

To the left, we show a rare copy of "Stories from The Arabian Nights" (as retold by Lawrence Housman). This

First Edition co-jointly published by Hodder & Stoughton (London) and Charles Scribner's Sons (New York)

in 1907.

It is noteworthy that the printing for both publishing houses was undertaken in the United Kingdom by

Butler and Tanner.

This example retains the original decoratively gilt-, silver- and blue-stamped burnt-orange cloth cover.

Critical reviews published elsewhere, in both the United States and Great Britain, also provided high praise for Dulac's artwork. On such critique was published in

"The New York Tribune" prior the Christmas of 1907:

The book is one of the most artistic of the year. He has a feeling for the ineffably strange

note that characterises the ancient romances.

The review published in "The Studio" (Vol. 43: 1908) following some months after publication continued to praise the work of the publishers and Dulac:

The perennial charm of the "Arabian Nights," which will endure so long as human nature

remains the same, has been well preserved by the collaborators in the production of the

new illustrated edition. In his interesting preface Mr. Housman aptly defines the cause of

the success of the great story-teller, Scheherazade, when he says procrastination was

the basis of her art, for though the task she accomplished was splendid and memorable,

it is rather in the quantity than in the quality of her invention – in the long-spun-out

performance of what could have been done far more shortly – that she becomes a figure

of dramatic interest. "The idea," he adds, "which binds the stories together is greater and

more romantic than the stories themselves, and though . . . the diurnal interruption in their

flow is more or less taken for granted, we are never quite robbed of the sense that it is

Scheherazade who is speaking, Scheherazade the loquacious, the self-possessed,

sitting up in bed at the renewed call of dawn to save her neck for the round of another

day." The stories selected for re-telling are those of 'The Fisherman and the Genie',

'The King of the Ebony Isles', 'Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves', 'The Magic Horse',

'The Wicked Half-Brothers' and 'The Princess of Derzabar' and in the fifty fine pictorial

interpretations of thrilling incidents in them Mr. Dulac displays considerable imaginative

power. His colour scheme is clever, and many of his drawings are well composed and

full of poetic suggestion.
