Gods and Mortals in Love (1935)

Illustrated by Edmund Dulac

To the left, we show a rare copy of Hugh Ross Williamson's

Gods and Mortals in Love produced by Country Life Limited

(London) in 1935.

This example shows the original decoratively woven cloth cover

with blue pseudo-archaic Greek-style lettering and decoration.

Williamson's Gods and Mortals in Love includes 11 tales from Greek myths: Aphrodite and Adonis; Selene and Endymion;

Pluto and Persephone; Psyche and Cerberus; Pan and Syrinx; Zeus and Europa; Orpheus and Eurydice; Circe and

Odysseus; Jason and Medea; Herakles and Deianeira; and Perseus and Andromeda.

Dulac provides some thoughtful words through an introduction to Gods and Mortals in Love thus:

The illustrations in this book have already appeared in front pages in the

American Weekly.

A book with coloured pictures and an illustrated book are not quite the

same thing. One may say that each has its own function and its own appeal.

This is presented as a book with coloured pictures.

Dulac's illustrations for Gods and Mortals in Love are wonderful examples of his later high Art Nouveau style. The

composition of the images are striking and the illustrations have been crafted exquisitely.

Our Greeting Cards and Reproduction Prints

When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-in plates - in hommage to the hand-crafted

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Each card is

hand-finished and and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope. The rear of each

card carries information about Edmund Dulac, this wonderful suite and the profiled illustration - we have left the interior

of the cards blank so that you may write your own personal message.

Should you wish to order a Reproduction Print of one or more of these images, we have provided some options below.

Each of these large format prints is also accompanied by information about Edmund Dulac, this suite and the profiled

illustration.
