"Savoy Operas" (1909)

"Savoy Operas" (1909), as published by George Bell & Sons (London), includes four 'Libretti' from Gilbert and Sullivan: 'The Pirates of

Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty'; 'Patience; or, Bunthorne's Bride'; 'Princess Ida; or, Castle Adament'; and 'The Yeomen of the Guard; or,

The Merryman and his Maid'.

For each of the works, William Russell Flint prepared eight colour illustrations so that the combined collection for ''Savoy Operas'' (1909)

comprised 32 images. A year later, George Bell & Sons produced the companion volume, "Iolanthe and Other Operas" with a further

32 colour illustrations from Russell Flint.

Upon publication, "Savoy Operas" was well received by critics and the public alike, with George Bell & Sons splitting the collection into

individual 'Libretti' and publishing each with the accompanying eight Russell Flint colour illustrations in subsequent years.

One review, published in "The Independent" (January 20, 1910) included the following comment:

Mr Flint's pictures are altogether delightful, quite as sparklingly operatic in spirit and execution

as the masterpieces of wholesome fun and frolic which they so admirably illustrate, and they

have been most skillfully and beautifully reproduced.

A similarly complementary review was published in "The Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art" (Vol. 108: 1909):

This handsome volume will be a source of sheer delight to the many who rejoice in Savoy

opera ... Mr Russell Flint's illustrations are throughout in striking harmony with the text. We

think few persons have hitherto applied themselves to the study of the Gilbertian 'libretti', but

there is no doubt that this delightful book will add greatly to their numbers.
