"Green Willow and other Japanese Fairy Tales" (1910)

Illustrated by Warwick Goble

The tales included in "Green Willow and other Japanese Fairy Tales" by Grace James were gathered from many sources. The Note appearing

as the effective Foreword to the title outlines the preparation of the collection:

Some of them have been selected from the "Ko-ji-ki", or "Record of Ancient Matters",

which contains the mythology of Japan. Many are told from memory, being relics of

childish days, originally heard from the lips of a school-fellow or a nurse. Certain of

them, again, form favourite subjects for representation upon the Japanese stage. A

number of the stories now gathered together have been translated into English long

before this, and have appeared in this country in one form or another; others are

probably new to an English public.

Thanks are due to Marcus B Huish, Esq., who has allowed his story, "The Espousal

of the Rat's Daughter," to be included in this collection; and to Mrs T H James for

permission to use her version of "The Matsuyama Mirror".

The review appearing in "The Dial" (Vol. 49: 1910) commented on Goble's illustrations thus:

Mr Goble's forty delicately-coloured illustrations are surprisingly successful in reproducing

the native atmosphere of the tales, and altogether the volume is one of the most charming

and unusual of the season's offerings.

A similar critique to that appearing in ''The Dial'' (noted above) for Goble's illustrations for "Green Willow and other Japanese Fairy Tales"

was published in "The Burlington Magazine" (Vol. 18: 1910) thus:

... it contains lively fancies by Mr Warwick Goble at least attractively drawn, coloured, and

printed in a sufficiently Europeanized Japanese manner to suit the charming stories.

Such positive contemporary reviews echo the comments of more modern critiques, including that published by the Rhode Island School of

Design's Museum of Art, which noted that this suite of illustrations is considered to be among his best illustrated book designs.
