The Arcadian Calendar for 1910 (1909)

Illustrated by Vernon Hill

To the left, we show a copy of The Arcadian Calendar for 1910,

as illustrated by Vernon Hill and published by John Lane in 1909.

This example retains the original illustrated black-stamped

green card cover.

On the right, we show the decorated Title Page

to The Arcadian Calendar for 1910.

Published in 1909 by John Lane The Bodley Head, The Arcadian Calendar for 1910 is an extraordinarily rare publication.

As noted on the Cover and Title Page, the Calendar was invented by the illustrator - Vernon Hill - and each of his images

for subsequent months interpret the associated text in a most wonderful, if dark, manner. Consider, for example, the text

and imagery for the month of January:

JANUARY

We were awake and went out into the snow, heedless of our naked feet and scanty night attire. In the enthusiasm of the moment, our aged bodies were glowing with something like their old fire, and we hastened over the cruel ground, never resting until we reached the Boundaries of our Present Time. Even as we arrived there, the great White Cloud opened, and we went down upon our knees because of our great anticipation. The seconds dragged like lead! Then, slowly descending the narrow winding Way in the Deep Night, came He who holds the Future, mystically draped, and mounted strangely upon an elaborately caparisoned Ass! We threw up our arms because of the yearning in our hearts! For He bore with Him, upon a soft, starry Cushion, His gift to us - the bright and happy New Year.

The Gothic Art Nouveau imagery throughout The Arcadian Calendar for 1910 is worthy of the term "genius", as used by

Chope in reference to Hill's work in 1913.

When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-in plates - in homage to the hand-crafted approach

typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.

Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card

stock (in the case of colour illustrations) or White card stock (in the case of monotone illustrations) with an accompanying

envelope. We have left the cards blank so that you may write your own personal message.

Should you wish to order a Poster or Reproduction Print from this suite of images, we have included some options below.

To purchase, simply activate the "Add To Cart" function and you will be able to begin shopping through our facility with

PayPal. Of course, should you require a customised preparation, or have other any other questions, we welcome your

contact through ThePeople@SpiritoftheAges.com.

In the meantime, enjoy perusing these evocative images from Vernon Hill.
