The Revolt of the Angels (1924)
Illustrated by Frank C Papé
The Revolt of the Angels is a powerful tale from Anatole France (a Nobel Laureat). The review published in The New York Times upon initial release (without illustrations) provides a wonderful introduction to one of France's classic works:
[The Revolt of the Angels] will, to many readers appear, quite literally, as sinister as the Devil himself.
The plutonic comparison is no mere rhetorical flourish, for the subject of the story is a new conspiracy on the part of the Angels to dethrone God: and the events of the elder conspiracy, which John Milton "has sung," as M. France causes the Abbé Coignard to remark in another book, "with very great barbarity," are related from the point of view of a participant on the losing side ...
The review continues and takes the reader through some of the work's seminal moments, before closing with the following comment:
It is unnecessary to add after such a climax, The Revolt of the Angels will offend only the unintelligent - those whom the letter has killed and the spirit has not yet made alive. Whether we call the archetype of Ignorance and Fear "Ialdabaoth", "Lucifer", or "God" is little: to recognise that in each of us there is Fear and the conqueror of Fear, and the battleground between the two, and that Victory is not a concrete thing, but a condition of the soul is much. And it is this that the novel of Anatole France's old age, the ripe fruit of his genius, helps us, albeit by the unfamiliar road of laughter, to perceive. |

On the left, we show a rare copy of The Revolt of the Angels published with Papé's illustrations for the first time in 1924.
This example retains the original decorative gilt-stamped black cloth cover.
To the right, we show the decorative Title Page prepared by Papé. |
France's novel needed to wait a decade until it was matched with the stunning illustrations and extensive decorations
designed by Frank C Papé (the illustrated edition was first published by John Lane The Bodley Head Ltd [London]) in
1924.
