Milton's Paradise Lost
Illustrated by Gustave Doré
Paradise Lost is the work of the 17th Century English poet, polemicist and civil servant, John Milton (1608-1674). Pollard and Moss (New York) published a volume of Milton's work illustrated by Gustave Doré in 1887. |
|
Above, we show an antique example (circa 1887) of Milton's Paradise Lost as illustrated by Gustave Doré |
Paradise Lost ostensibly tells the Judeo-Christian tale of the Fall, including: Satan's failed assault on the Heavenly throne and his subsequent fate and that of his minions; the temptation of Adam and Eve and the banishment; Noah's Ark and the Flood; and Moses entering a new Covenant with God. However, the tale as described by Milton also serves as a metaphor for his exploration of the path and fate of the Puritan and Parliamentary causes in 17th Century England.
Milton himself was a prominent civil servant within the Commonwealth established by Oliver Cromwell prior to the restitution of the Stuart Monarchy in 1660.
Doré's inspirational illustrations capture all aspects of Milton's work, complementing the author's sentiment and pathos to magnificent effect. |
