Domnei: A Comedy of Woman-Worship (1930)
Illustrated by Frank C Papé
Domnei: A Comedy of Woman-Worship is one a James Branch Cabell's fantasy works - as is, in fact, a restyled variant of an earlier work, The Soul of Melicent. Throughout the tale, Cabell weaves a romantic fantasy in which Melicent (the daughter of the noble Emanuel) first falls in love with an outlaw, only to be kidnapped by the evil Demetrios and harassed by the Wandering Jew. In a review for the Cincinnati Enquirer, Charles Hanson Towne provided the following comment:
Each sentence is a picture. It is a charming book, a passionate romance that should have an abiding place upon one's shelves. |

On the left, we show a rare copy of Domnei: A Comedy of Woman-Worship published with Papé's illustrations for the first time in 1930.
This example retains the original decorative gilt-stamped black cloth cover.
To the right, we show the decorative Title Page prepared by Papé. |
The suite of illustrations prepared by Frank C Papé to accompany Cabell's work are a further example of his fully matured
style and demonstrate a keen eye for illustrative interpretation of adult fantasy.
