Alice au pays des merveilles (1949) (Alice in Wonderland)
Illustrations by Adrienne Ségur
The deluxe presentation of Ségur's illustrations to Alice au pays des merveilles by the French publishing house of Ernest Flammarion is an absolute delight. Ségur's images are wonderfully delightful in any setting, but appearing in the 1949 edition, they are produced in an unusually large format that is absolutely sublime. |
|
Stylistically, the suite prepared by Ségur for Alice au pays des merveilles was a radical departure from the simpler illustrations
she had contributed to publications previously and it was through this shift that she continued to develop a strong
idiosyncratic approach to fantasy illustrations.
To the left, we show a rare copy of the 1949 edition Alice au pays des merveilles with illustrations by Adrienne Ségur. Published by Ernest Flammarion (Paris), this example retains the original rare illustrated dust jacket.
On the right, we show the original maroon-stamped salmon-coloured cloth cover. |
In a set of colour and monotone illustrations, Ségur depicts moments from the classic tale by Lewis Carroll from each Chapter, including: "Dans le Terrier du Lapin" ("Down the Rabbit Hole"); "La Mare de Larmes" ("The Pool of Tears"); "Une Course a la Caucus et une Longue Histoire" ("The Caucus Race and a Long Tale"); "Petit Bill" ("The Rabbit Sends a Little Bill"); "Les Conseils d'une Chenille" ("Advice from a Caterpillar"); "Petit Cochon et Poivre" ("Pig and Pepper"); "Un Thé de Fous" ("A Mad Tea Party"); "Le Terrain de Croquet de la Reine" ("The Queen's Croquet Ground"); "Histoire de la Fausse Tortue" ("The Mock Turtle's Story"); "Le Quadrille des Homards" ("Lobster Quadrile"); "Qui a Volé les Tartes" ("Who Stole the Tarts?"); and "Le Témoignage d'Alice" ("Alice's Evidence"). |
