As enthusiasts, while preparing these illustrations in the largest size possible, we appreciate the desirability of replicating

the line, form, colour and finish of these wonderful images just as they would have appeared to Mackenzie. To that end,

throughout the page that follows, we have shown images optimised for reproduction in larger formats - usually in a

manner pleasing for 10 x 13" or 10 x 15" framing options. We consider those formats identified to be the largest that

allows the accurate reproduction of form, line and colour as prepared by Mackenzie and originally printed in the

1st Edition plates. To reproduce the images, we have utilised a high definition capture and reproduction technique

and ensure that the prints are displayed with a satin finish that reproduces the visual appearance of the original plates.

Purchasing one, or more, of those reproductions is a simple as clicking on the "Add to Cart" buttons and following the prompts

provided for PayPal purchase.

We have also developed a range of Giftware that includes images reproduced on cards, infants' clothing, T-shirts and

unmatted, matted or framed prints (8x6", 10x8", 12x10", 15x10" and 30 x 20" images sizes). Pricing starts at US$4 for single

Gift Cards (US$18 for select packs of 6) and 10 x 8" prints (double-matted and framed) begin at US$60. Further details

The Artwork of Thomas Mackenzie

Thomas Mackenzie (1887-1944) was an artist producing illustrations for books and watercolours during the early

20th Century. His first commissioned work - illustrations for Chaundler's Arthur and His Knights - was produced in

1920. Other illustrated books followed, including Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp, Hassan and The Crock of Gold

Mackenzie's illustrations are reminiscent of the work of his Art Nouveau peers, including Aubrey Beardsley, Harry

Clarke and Kay Nielsen. His images for Arthur and His Knights, in particular, are stylistically similar to those of

Nielsen in East of the Sun and West of the Moon, but have a softness about them that remind one of the

watercolours that he also produced.

Arthur and His Knights (1920)

A rare copy of Chaundler's Arthur and His Knights - as illustrated by Thomas Mackenzie - produced by Nisbet & Co. Ltd. (London) in, or about, 1920.

This copy shows the original decorative

stamped and coloured olive cover.

Presenting Chaundler's own version of the Arthurian legend, this tale opens with an introduction to Merlin and

proceeds through a tale that would be familiar to many: Arthur is introduced to Excalibur and founds his Court

around The Round Table; Merlin passes and Morgan le Fay begins her influence; Quests - including that for

The Holy Grail - are described involving Lancelot, Sir Kay, Gareth, Sir Tristram and Sir Galahad; the exile of

Queen Guinevere; and the passing of King Arthur.

Mackenzie's contributions in both colour and monotone are magnificent. His selection and presentation of subject is

inspired and the rendering of colour superbly in a mixture of subtle and rich tones is indicative of his milieu.

Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp in Rhyme (1920)

A rare copy of Ransome's Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp in Rhyme - as illustrated by Thomas Mackenzie - printed by K. & S. (St John's Square, London), in or about 1920. That printing was published under the banner of Nisbet & Co. Ltd. (London) for the British market and Brentano's (New York) for the American market.

This copy shows the original decoratively stamped and coloured mustard cloth cover.

The traditional Persian tale of Aladdin is brought to life with stunningly sumptuous imagery by Mackenzie in his

contributions to Ransome's version: Aladdin and His Wonderful Lamp in Rhyme. Interestingly, Mackenzie has applied

an Oriental - rather than Orientalist - perspective to the imagery which is more reminiscent of the Far East than

a more typical treatment that may have placed the story in an Arabian setting.

That approach is reflected in the marginal illustrations too, with distinct influences from then-contemporary

Meiji-era Japanese woodblock artists most apparent.

Hassan (1924)

A rare copy of the Flecker's play Hassan - as illustrated by Thomas Mackenzie - produced by William Heinemann, Ltd (London) in 1924.

This copy shows the original decoratively gilt-stamped red cloth cover.

Hassan is a play written by James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915) - an author and playright whose work has been compared

to that of Keats. Flecker's study of oriental languages influenced his works - the influences in Hassan are obvious. The

play is also known as Hassan: The Story of Hassan of Baghdad and How He Came to Make the Golden Journey to

Samarakand.

In addition to Hassan - a Confectioner - the characters include: the Caliph Haroun Ar Raschid; Ishak

(the Caliph's Minstrel); Jafar (the Caliph's Vizier); Masrur (the Caliph's Executioner); Selim (Hassan's friend);

the Captain of the Military; the Chief of Police; Nondescripts such as Ali and Abdu; Slaves such as Alder, Willow,

Tamarisk and Juniper; the Porter of Yasmin's House; the Chinese Philosopher; a Dervish; the Fountain Ghost;

a Herald; the Prison Guards; Pervaneh; Yasmin; an Ambassador; a Wrestler; a Caligraphist; a Jester; Ghosts; Mutes;

Dancing Women; Beggars; Soldiers; Police; Attendants; and Casual Loiterers.

Mackenzie's illustrative interpretations of Flecker's work are dramatic, beautiful and evocative examples of the Art

Nouveau style with distinct Orientalist influences.
