The Gods of Pegãna (1905)

To the left, we show a copy of The Gods of Pegãna, as illustrated by Sidney H Sime and published by Elkin Mathews (London) in 1905. It shows the original blue-stamped board cover with an illustration drawn from Sime's depiction of 'Skarl the Drummer'.

The Gods of Pegãna is a fantasy from Lord Dunsany that is a collection of short stories telling of Dunsany's pantheon of Gods

in the mythical realm of Pegãna.

Contemporary reviews for The Gods of Pegãna were favourable, including that from the Daily Telegraph:

Lord Dunsany has succumbed to the fascination of composing a new theology. If the result

had merely been the fantastic and finely imagined illustrations evoked from the sombre pencil

of Mr S. H. Sime it would have been sufficient ... but the book has a separate charm of its own,

in the language of its fragmentary visions, in the mysterious atmosphere produced by the deliberate

choice of words and method, in the sometimes graceful, sometimes tragic, sometimes grotesque

ideas in which the author embodies the creed of those 'islands in the central sea, where no ships

come'.

Sime's illustrations were particularly well regarded by the Pall Mall Gazette:

Never, we think, has Mr Sime shown such high imaginative qualities as in these drawings.

Sime's illustrations for The Gods of Pegãna are wonderful and reflect the tone of the spiritual fantasy written by Dunsany

masterfully.
