The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault (1922)
Designs by Harry Clarke
On the left, we show an example of the 1st Edition of The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault that retains the original blue- and black-stamped and illustrated cream cloth cover. That binding is the variant associated with books carrying the Harrap citation.
To the right, we show the variant binding typical of those 1st Editions that were assigned the Dodge citation.

The Fairy Tales of Charles Perrault was co-published by George G Harrap & Co. Ltd (London) and Dodge
Publishing Co. (New York) in 1922. Regardless of the publishing citation, all copies of the 1st Edition were
printed by Turnbull & Spears (Edinburgh).
Clarke produced a sumptuous variety of illustrations for this commission, including 12 colour images, a further
12 major monotone illustrations and a range of marginal monotone images for decorations including the Titles
and Chapter headings and end-pieces.
Throughout, Clarke provides a wonderful interpretation of some classic tales by Perrault, including: "Little Red
Riding Hood"; "The Fairies"; "Bluebeard"; "The Sleeping Beauty in the Forest"; "Puss in Boots"; "Cinderella; or,
The Little Glass Slipper"; "Riquet with the Tuft"; "Little Thumb"; "The Ridiculous Wishes"; and "Donkey-Skin".
