The Crock of Gold is a novel from James Stephens that mixes philosophy, Irish folklore and the seemingly eternal discord
between the sexes with charm, humour and good grace. Throughout the novels 6 books - 'The Coming of Pan',
'The Philosopher's Journey', 'The Two Gods', 'The Philosopher's Return', 'The Policemen' and 'The Thin Woman's
Journey' - the tale involves a philosopher and his quest to find Cáitlin Ni Murrachu and deliver her from the dog Pan
(while the philosopher, himself, experiences catharsis).
Mackenzie's illustrations complement the work of James Stephens in wonderful fashion. In addition to the lovely colour
suite of images, Mackenzie also prepared a large number of monotone illustrations that appeared throughout The Crock
of Gold as marginalia.
