The Medieval and Renaissance Collection

A visually and historically significant collection of genuine Medieval and Renaissance objects d'art is waiting for you.

Consider medieval swords, daggers, pages from illuminated manuscripts or a carved stone column capital. Renaissance

art is also waiting, including a monumental depiction of the Emperor Maximillian in Triumph surrounded by the Fates

(Dürer's Great Triumphal Chariot), pages from The Nuremberg Chronicle showing the creation of the World and

historically significant cartographic work by Ruscelli.

 

We are also pleased to be able to show a complete set of the illustrations from the famous 1775 Kurzböck printing of

Der Weiss Kunig. Images are also shown from works commissioned by Emperor Maximilian, including Theuerdank and

We have developed a range of Giftware that includes images reproduced from many of the 1st Edition plates in our

collection to ensure the most accurate form, line and colour possible. We have utilised a high definition capture and

reproduction technique for the images - in contrast to the low definition representation necessary for this website. The

illustrations are available as cards, infants' clothing, T-shirts and unmatted, matted or framed prints (8x6", 10x8", 12x10",

15x10" and 30 x 20" images sizes). Pricing starts at US$4 for single Gift Cards (US$18 for select packs of 6) and 10 x 8"

In this portion of the Collection, we are able to show some work from the genius of Gustave Doré - one of the

marvels of 19th Century art.

 

The range of Pagan and Christian imagery exhibited through his work belies a colossal imagination and a magnificent

apprehension of all possible conditions of human experience. His lofty insight into the mysteries of Spiritual existence

as reflected from Earthly actualities entitle him to be classed among the great creative geniuses of all time.

 

Images are shown from his contributions to Michaud's History of the Crusades, Dante's Inferno and Purgatory and

Paradise and Milton's Paradise Lost.

Nielsen's Red Magic

 

The images within the Kay Nielsen Collection illustrate traditional fairy tales, Norse myths and legend from a variety

of cultures. You will find treasures as diverse as armoured Vikings on horseback in battle, Norse maidens riding polar

bears, a Viking lad snuggled up with the Sultan's daughter and knights battling dragons and mermaids.
