The Birth of the Opal (1913)
Illustrated by Daphne Allen
Published in 1913 by George Allen & Company Limited (London), The Birth of the Opal followed the successful
critical reception of Daphne Allen's artwork in A Child's Visions. In his Introduction, Walter Ellis provides the
following description of this collection of Allen's illustrations:
A favourable reception accorded by the Press and the public to the drawings by
Daphne Allen illustrating the Christian story, which were recently published under
the title of "A Child's Visions", and to the original sketches when exhibited at the
Dudley Galleries and at the Children's Welfare Exhibition, has encouraged her
friends to produce this companion volume "The Birth of the Opal".
The first part of the book consists of short fairy stories written by the artist herself,
accompanying and explaining certain of the drawings; the latter part consists of
drawings for which she did not furnish any explanation, and I have done my best
to supply selections from the poets which suggest similar line of thought or
imagination. It must be clearly understood that the drawings were in no way
suggested by the poems or by any outside agency' they are the pure fruit of the
child's own fancy, done as the spirit moved her, without any purpose of publication.
The colour and monotone illustrations throughout The Birth of the Opal were all prepared while Allen was
14 years of age or younger. Following her debut with A Child's Visions, The Birth of the Opal shows the earlier
examples of Allen's work in a delightful manner.
Copies of The Birth of the Opal are rare and the delicate images from Allen are wonderful.
