The version of Hawthorne's Tanglewood Tales illustrated by Virginia Sterrett appeared in 1st Edition form in 1921 when

it was published by The Penn Publishing Company (Philadelphia). The classic tales from Hawthorne included in that

1st Edition were: "The Minotaur"; "The Pygmies"; "The Dragon's Teeth"; "Circe's Palace"; "The Pomegranate Seeds"; and

"The Golden Fleece".

 

Sterrett's illustrations to accompany the tales based on myths from Ancient Greece blend elements of Art Nouveau and

Art Deco with influences from Antiquity to magical effect.

When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-on plates - in hommage to the hand-crafted

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Each card is

hand-finished and the images are presented on Ivory card stock (in the case of the colour illustrations) or White card

stock (in the case of monotone illustrations) with an accompanying envelope. The rear of each card carries information

about Virginia Sterrett, this wonderful suite and the profiled illustration - we have left the interior of the cards blank so

that you may write your own personal message.
