The Artwork
of Sulamith Wülfing
Sulamith Wülfing (1901-1989) was a German artist and
illustrator and is best known for her unique style of depicting
ethereal themes.
With a familial
background that included Theosophist parents, Wülfing's interest in illustrating
fairytales and mystical
events may be understood. However, given that she,
herself, experienced visitations from angels, fairies, gnomes
and nature spirits
throughout her life, Wülfing's art provides an insight into her own otherworldly
visions.

Christian Morgenstern (1934)
 |
A rare copy of the 1934 edition of Wülfing's
illustrations accompanying poetry in Christian Morgenstern -
an illustrated collection of poems by Morgenstern - produced by Sulamith Wülfing-Verlag (Wuppertal-Elberfeld).
This copy shows the original decoratively
olive-stamped vellum-coloured cover.
Only 6,000 copies of this
edition were produced.
|
Wülfing illustrates a collection of poems by the German
poet and author, Christian Morgenstern, including: "Eins und
Alles" ("One
and All"); "Die Stimme" ("The Voice"); "Traum" ("Dream"); "Kinderliebe"
("Child Love"); "Dunkel Gäste"
("Dark Guest"); "Ich bin aus Gott" (I am from
God"); "Der Engel" ("The Angel"); "Gib mid den Anblick"
("Give me the
sight"); and "Non wollen wir" ("Now we want").
Morgenstern (1871-1914) penned work that ran
counter to the prevailing orthodoxy and was imbibed with
metaphysical
references. Given the gorgeous contributions by Wülfing to this
collection, it is clear that there
was resonance between the artists.

The collection of plates offered by Wülfing in Der
Leuchter demonstrate her devotion to capturing the very essence
of Being -
in line, contrasting colour and shading. In his introduction to Der Leuchter, Otto
Schulze - Wülfing's
husband (also a Professer at the Art College in Wuppertal) - notes her particular success in details including the
clarity
of the night sky, the delicate lines created by the fall of costumes and bejeweled thrones and garments.
Schulze's praise is well-placed - Wülfing's images of
Angels, Crystal Children, phases of Human development and
dreams are delightful.

Four of Wülfing's numerous marginal
contributions accompanying her
illustrations for Die Kleine Seejungfrau |
Die Kleine Seejungfrau (The Little Mermaid)
recounts the fairy tale written by the 19th Century Danish author, Hans
Christian Andersen (1805-1875). It is the story of a young mermaid who offers to
abandon all that she knows to
gain an immortal soul and the love of a prince.
Wüulfing's illustrations to this version of Andersen's
classic tale are breathtaking - and true to her inimitable style, she
takes us
on a ethereal journey through the tale.
