Snythergen is a whimsical story by Hal Garrott recounting the adventures of a magical boy - Snythergen. The 1st Edition
carrying illustrations by Dugald Walker was published by Robert M McBride & Company (New York) in 1923.
The promotional material provided by the publishers makes interesting reading:
Never was there a jollier little fellow - although little is scarcely the word - than this
Snythergen, and never were there adventures better calculated to delight a child than
the tale of how he grew first so very round and later so very tall that he could not
remain at home any longer, but was obliged to live in the forest and to become a
tree. In the forest lived Squeaky, the pig, and Sancho, the goldfinch, and the three
became the best of friends.
As may be expected by description promoted by the publishers, Snythergen is a childrens' tale similar to Carroll's
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Throughout Garrott's tale, Snythergen grows to such an enormous size that he can
no longer fit in his home and the task of feeding him becomes too much for his parents to manage. Consequently, he
travels to find his way in the world and on his journeys, lives - for some time - in the forest as a tree. Snythergen also
discovers he can communicate with animals. Towards the end of the tale, Snythergen dines with Santa Claus and
discusses the personality of bears. Finally, Snythergen finds he can return to normal size by eating only "Toy Foods"
and he is reunited with his family.
