Rainbow Gold (1922)

Designs by Dugald Stewart Walker

 

 

To the left is shown a rare copy of Rainbow Gold, an anthology of poems

selected by Sara Teasdale with illustrations contributed by Dugald Walker - as

published by The MacMillan Company (New York) in 1922.

 

This copy shows the original decoratively gilt-stamped blue cloth cover.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Rainbow Gold is an anthology of poems selected by Sara Teasdale and illustrated an beautiful fashion by Dugald

Walker. Teasdale outlines her motivation for the anthology in her Prefatory Note:

 

I have made a small collection of poems that would have pleased the child I used to be

and the boy who was my playmate. Above all things I have striven to keep the book

small, for the big books of poetry on our shelves are always left to themselves. It was

the little books that became our intimate companions.

 

The images contributed by Walker to Rainbow Gold are lovely.

When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-in plates - in homage to the hand-crafted

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.

 

Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on

Ivory card stock (in the case of colour illustrations) or White card stock (in the case of monotone illustrations)

with an accompanying envelope. We have left the cards blank so that you may write your own personal

message.
