The Golden Age (1905)
Illustrated by Maxfield Parrish
To the left, we show a copy of The Golden Age, as illustrated by Maxfield Parrish and published by John Lane, The Bodley Head (London) in 1905.
It shows the original decorated green cloth cover and includes the illustrations reproduced with the superior photogravure technique that was used for the first time in the 1905 Edition.
On the right, we show the Title Page as decorated by Maxfield Parrish. |
The Golden Age (1905) is the 1st Edition of Grahame's collection of stories to include illustrations by Maxfield Parrish
reproduced in photogravure - a previous edition had been produced using an inferior half-tone technique. The tales
within this book include: "The Olympians"; "A Holiday"; "A White-Washed Uncle"; "Alarums and Excursions"; "The Finding
of the Princess"; "Sawdust and Sin"; "Young Adam Cupid"; "The Burglars"; "A Harvesting"; "Snowbound"; "What They
Talked About"; "The Argonauts"; "The Roman Road"; "The Secret Drawer"; "Exit Tyrannus"; "The Blue Room"; "A Falling
Out"; and "Lusisti Satis".
While Parrish prepared colour illustrations for The Golden Age, quality issues with the reproduction technique available to
John Lane compelled the publisher to utilize a photogravure technique that produced high quality monotone reproductions
of the Parrish's original artwork.
In addition to the monotone illustrations appearing in The Golden Age (1905), we are also fortunate enough to be able to
display images of 6 of the colour illustrations Parrish prepared originally.

When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-on plates - in hommage to the hand-crafted
approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.
Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-on plate and the images are presented on
Ivory card stock (in the case of colour illustrations) or White card stock (in the case of monotone illustrations)
with an accompanying envelope. We have left the cards blank so that you may write your own personal
message.
Should you wish to order a Reproduction Print or an individual Greeting Card from this suite of images, we have
provided options below. Of course, should you require a customised preparation, we welcome your contact through
ThePeople@SpiritoftheAges.com.
In the meantime, enjoy perusing these wonderful images from Maxfield Parrish.
