"Phoebus on Halzaphron"
The Century Magazine (1901)
Illustrated by Maxfield Parrish
"Phoebus on Halzaphron" was a short story written by Arthur Quiller-Couch and published in the The Century Magazine
in 1901 accopanied by a suite of colour and monotone illustrations prepared by Maxfield Parrish.
The tale from Quiller-Couch is of a fictional ancient civilization on the coast of England that is under the spell of the
daughter of King Graul, Princess Gwennolar, whose spirit lures the men of the Kingdom to their deaths. While some
solace is provided by the mysterious character, The Singer, the Kingdom, is, nevertheless, undone by Gwennolar's
enchantment. After a chance meeting with an Irish monk, Saint Levan, The Singer is able to to leave the doomed
Kingdom.
The Parrish illustrations accompanying the fantasy from Quiller-Couch capture the dark romantic themes of the tale in a
wonderful manner.

When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-on plates - in hommage to the hand-crafted
approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.
Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-on plate and the images are presented on
Ivory card stock (in the case of colour illustrations) or White card stock (in the case of monotone illustrations)
with an accompanying envelope. We have left the cards blank so that you may write your own personal
message.
Should you wish to order a Reproduction Print or an individual Greeting Card from this suite of images, we have
