Where the Rainbow Ends (1920)
Illustrated by Leo Bates
On the left, we show a rare copy of the 1920 Edition of Where the Rainbow Ends, as illustrated by Leo Bates and produced by Hodder and Stoughton Limited (London).
This example retains the original decoratively stamped yellow cloth cover - one of the numerous variant bindings used for the 1st Edition.

The 1920 illustrated Edition of Where the Rainbow Ends is a literary adaptation of the children's play of the same name
that had been first performed in Christmas 1911 - the original cast for the performance (at London's Savoy Theatre) had
included Noel Coward and Jack Hawkins (the play being produced by Italia Conti).
In the decade following that first performance, Where the Rainbow Ends was the most performed children's play in
England - eclipsing the popularity of Peter Pan. The tale within the play - and the literary adaptation illustrated by Bates -
is set within imperialist Britain and concerns a group of children separated from their parents. Traveling on a magic carpet,
the children face various dangers on their way to rescue their parents and are guarded and assisted by Saint George.
Bates captures the themes of the tale - and of his times - in a wonderful manner.

When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-on plates - in hommage to the hand-crafted approach
typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.
Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-on plate and the images are presented on Ivory card
stock with an accompanying envelope. We have left the cards blank so that you may write your own personal message.
