The Garden of Kama (1914)

of The Garden of Kama carrying the illustrations of

John Byam Shaw. That co-published by William Heinemann

(London) and John Lane Company (New York) in 1914.

 

This copy retains the original black- and gold-stamped

decorated orange cloth cover.

 

 

 

 

 

 

On the right, we show the illustrated Title Page of

Shaw's version of The Garden of Kama.

 

The Garden of Kama is a collection of poetry written by Adela Florence Nicholson - published under the pseudonym of

'Laurence Hope'. As first published, the poetry purported to be translations of ancient Indian tales, but this claim was later

exposed as false. The symbolism used by Nicholson in her poems of love and loss drew strongly on imagery and symbolism

used by the poet of the Indian north-west frontier, in addition to that of the Sufi poets of Persia.

 

The illustrations to The Garden of Kama from John Byam Shaw complement the work of Nicholson in a glorious and

sensual manner.

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.

 

Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-on plate and the images are presented on Ivory card

stock with an accompanying envelope. We have left the cards blank so that you may write your own personal message.
