The Art of Jean de Bosschère
Gardner (1927) provides the following short critique of Jean de Bosschère:
Jean de Bosschère is an artist whose highly imaginative and individual work is greatly enjoyed by children. His color effects, slightly suggestive of the Persian, are usual and daring but beautiful. He possess a lively fancy and a skilled technique which make his original interpretations of the Folk Tales of Flanders and Christmas Tales of Flanders an unending delight.
Comparisons with Harry Clarke or Willy Pogány would also be reasonable. Stylistically, those familiar with the work of Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Breugel the Elder may be reminded of those great Renaissance artists when considering his earlier colour work - and that from his later career may be reminiscent of the genius of Aubrey Beardsley. Undoubtedly, however, Jean de Bosschère - like other great illustrators - is unique.
