The History of Don Quixote de la Mancha (1922) is based upon a translation of Cervantes' classic tale from the Spanish Golden
Age, El ingeniosos hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha (The Ingenious Hidalgo Don Quixote of La Mancha).
Cervantes' work weaves the tale of the fictional character of Alonso Quixano as he descends from a mere obsession with
chivalric tales to insanity - in which he believes himself to be a courageous Knight. Throughout, the author depicts the lives
of the common people of Spain in what was, for the early 16th Century, quite innovative.
Jean de Bosschère's suite of illustration prepared to accompany the translated text is superb - with more than 80 images in
total (one in full colour, a further eight produced in the style of coloured linocuts, 16 major monotone illustrations and a
plethora of monotone marginalia).
