Histoire d'un Casse-Noisette (1953)

To the left, we show a rare copy of the 1953 edition of Histoire d'un Casse-Noisette

with illustrations by Adrienne Ségur - published by Ernest Flammarion (Paris).

This example retains the original white-stamped brown board cover.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

For Histoire d'un Casse-Noisette, Ségur had the opportunity to interpret Hoffmann's classic tale - as it had been adapted by one of France's most famous 19th Century writers, Alexandre Dumas.

 

Her suite of illustrations, on this occasion, included major colour and monotone images, in addition to minor monotone images. Ségur prepared glorious images to accompany each major element of Hoffmann's tale, including: "La parrain

Drosselmayer" ("Godfather Drosselmayer"); "L'arbre de Noël" ("The Christmas Tree"); "Choses merveilleuses" ("Wonderful things"); "La bataille" ("The Battle"); "La maladie" ("The Malady"); "Histoire de la noisette Krakatuk et de la princesse Pirlipate" ("The History of Krakatuk the Hazelnut and Pirlipate the Princess"); "L'oncle et le neveu" ("The Uncle and the Nephew"); and "Le voyage" ("The Voyage").

 

Once more, as with Alice au pays des merveilles and Il était une fois ... vieux contes français, Ségur's art was reproduced in an unusual, but wonderful, large format that is an absolute joy to behold for adults and children alike. As such, her illustrations prove to be a most fitting complement to Dumas' adaptation of the tale of a young girl's imaginary adventure involving Clara (her doll) and her chivalrous life-sized Nutcracker (a Christmas gift from her Godfather) in which the Mouse King is defeated and Clara and the Nutcracker (transformed into a Prince) rule over a magical kingdom of dolls.

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Each card is

hand-finished and the images are presented on Ivory card stock (in the case of colour illustrations) or White card stock

(in the case of monotone illustrations) with an accompanying envelope. The rear of each card carries information about

Adrienne Ségur, this wonderful suite and the profiled illustration - we have left the interior of the cards blank so that you

may write your own personal message.
