Hassan is a play written by James Elroy Flecker (1884-1915) - an author and playright whose work has been compared to
that of Keats. Flecker's study of oriental languages influenced his works - the influences in Hassan are obvious. The play is
also known as Hassan: The Story of Hassan of Baghdad and How He Came to Make the Golden Journey to Samarakand.
In addition to Hassan - a Confectioner - the characters include: the Caliph Haroun Ar Raschid; Ishak (the Caliph's Minstrel);
Jafar (the Caliph's Vizier); Masrur (the Caliph's Executioner); Selim (Hassan's friend); the Captain of the Military; the Chief
of Police; Nondescripts such as Ali and Abdu; Slaves such as Alder, Willow, Tamarisk and Juniper; the Porter of Yasmin's
House; the Chinese Philosopher; a Dervish; the Fountain Ghost; a Herald; the Prison Guards; Pervaneh; Yasmin; an
Ambassador; a Wrestler; a Caligraphist; a Jester; Ghosts; Mutes; Dancing Women; Beggars; Soldiers; Police; Attendants; and
Casual Loiterers.
Mackenzie's illustrative interpretations of Flecker's work are dramatic, beautiful and evocative examples of the Art Nouveau
style with distinct Orientalist influences.
