''Manuscript found in a Bottle''

The colossal waters rear their heads

above us like demons from the deep

Design by Harry Clarke

This illustration was among at least 8 colour designs prepared by Clarke to accompany the work of Edgar Allan Poe

that were to be published in the 1923 Edition of Tales of Mystery and Imagination. It was the sole colour illustration to

accompany the tale "Manuscript found in a Bottle" and is associated with the following text:

The colossal waters rear their heads above us like demons from the deep.

Poe's "Manuscript found in a bottle" gained popular acclaim first in 1833 when it was awarded first prize in a competition

conducted by the Baltimore Saturday Visitor. It recounts the contents of a seafarer's chronicle of the supernatural during

an expedition - including the seafarer's dilemma over joining the ghostly crew of a phantom ship.

Clarke's illustration is a wonderful example of his capacity to capture the tone and themes of dark fantasies.
