Turnierbuch is a suite of illustrations
attributed to Hans Burgkmair that as believed to have formed part of his great
work
to commemorate the life and reign of Emperor
Maximilian. It is thought that Burgkmair began to prepare these illustrations
soon after 1512, but at the time of Maximilian's death
in 1519, they remained unpublished.
Burgkmair's suite known as Turnierbuch
is typical of his work, in that it provides a detailed and
contemporaneous depiction of Court life - in this case, individuals,
armour, weapons and other accoutrements associated with a number of
elements of tournaments held during the reign of Maximilian.
Participants depicted throughout Turnierbuch participated in
at least three different tournaments, including those held at Graz,
Innsbruck and Augsburg.

When presented on Greeting Cards, these
images are prepared as tipped-on
plates - in hommage to the hand-crafted
approach typical
of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades
of the 20th Century. Each card is
hand-finished and the images are presented
on Ivory
card stock with an accompanying envelope. On the rear of each
card we also present some information about this great
work and each individual illustration. We have left the interior
of the cards blank so that you may write your own personal message.
