Lenda Myosotis Azul

(The Legend of the Blue Forget-Me-Not)

"You are to be called Azulina"

One of the great female artists of the Golden Age of Illustration, Florence Anderson is most often linked with what has

become known as the British Fairy School. For the 1916 Edition of The Black Princess and Other Fairy Tales from Brazil,

however, while illustrating that selection of traditional tales from South America, she incorporated approaching to colour

and composition that demonstrated a wide range of influences.

In this illustration - her composition to accompany the tale "Lenda Myosostis Azul" ("The Legend of the Blue Forget-Me-

Not") by 'Chysanthème' (Cecilia Rebelo Bandeira de Melo de Vasconcelos) - Anderson depicts a scene associated with the

following text:

You are to be called Azulina.

The colouring and composition could be argued to be influenced by Maxfield Parrish - and if there were any doubt

whatsoever of that artistic reference, Anderson has included two commedia dell'arte masks that are most reminiscent of

those appearing sporadically throughout the work of the American Master.
