One of the great female artists of the Golden Age of Illustration, Florence Anderson is most often linked with what has
become known as the British Fairy School. For the 1916 Edition of The Black Princess and Other Fairy Tales from Brazil,
however, while illustrating that selection of traditional tales from South America, she incorporated approaching to colour
and composition that demonstrated a wide range of influences.
In this illustration - her composition to accompany the tale "Lenda Myosostis Azul" ("The Legend of the Blue Forget-Me-
Not") by 'Chysanthème' (Cecilia Rebelo Bandeira de Melo de Vasconcelos) - Anderson depicts a scene associated with the
following text:
You are to be called Azulina.
The colouring and composition could be argued to be influenced by Maxfield Parrish - and if there were any doubt
whatsoever of that artistic reference, Anderson has included two commedia dell'arte masks that are most reminiscent of
those appearing sporadically throughout the work of the American Master.

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Each card is
hand-finished, with the image presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope. On the rear of each
card we also present some information about Florence Anderson and this wonderful illustration. We have left the
interior of the cards blank so that you may write your own personal message.
