A Princesa Negrina
(The Black Princess)
"Seeing a beautiful white rose, she stopped to pluck it"
One of the great female artists of the Golden Age of Illustration, Florence Anderson is most often linked with what has
become known as the British Fairy School. For the 1916 Edition of The Black Princess and Other Fairy Tales from Brazil,
however, while illustrating that selection of traditional tales from South America, she moved beyond the characteristic
European "fairy idyll" to one that was entirely more worldly.
In this illustration - her composition to accompany the tale "A Princesa Negrina" ("The Black Princess") by 'Chysanthème'
(Cecilia Rebelo Bandeira de Melo de Vasconcelos) - Anderson depicts the Princess of the tale's title in an image that is
associated with the following text:
Seeing a beautiful white rose, she stopped to pluck it.
It is a wonderful example of Anderson's artistic capacity and her keen ability to capture textual intent and themes within
her illustrations.
