The Story of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary (1912) is a version of the medieval Saint's history. In her short life, Saint Elizabeth
held a central role in strengthening alliances between the ruling families of Hungary and Thuringia (a state in Central
Germany). At the age of just four, Elizabeth was taken to the Thuringian Court and held as a future bride to Ludwig IV of
Thuringia. The couple were married whilst Elizabeth was 14 and prior to Ludwig's death 7 years later, they had three
children. Following the death of her husband in 1227, Elizabeth was harshly treated by her confessor, Konrad von Marburg. When free to pursue her own interests, Elizabeth continued the work she had undertaken prior to her husband's death
in serving God through caring for the poor. She died at the age of 24 in 1231.
The illustrations prepared by Fortescue-Brickdale to accompany this story are among her earliest published colour
commissions. Seminal moments in the Saint's life are depicted by Fortescue-Brickdale in an inspirational manner.
