The Art of Edward Burne-Jones
Sir Edward Coley Burne-Jones (1833-1898) was an artist associated with the Golden Age of Illustration. He was a designer linked with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
The Edward Burne-Jones Collection at Spirit of the Ages includes art images from some of his seminal work. As a valuable reference resource, options are also provided for purchasing a range of gifts, including reproduction prints, posters and greeting cards.
While attending Exeter College in Oxford, he became a friend of William Morris - with whom he later contributed to a number of magnificent works. He studied under Rossetti before traveling to Italy and drawing further influences from a range of artists, including Ruskin, with whom he traveled.
Burne-Jones was largely responsible for bringing the Pre-Raphaelites into the mainstream of the British art world and in doing so, he executed some of the most exquisite and beautiful artworks of his time. It is not without reason that Aymer Vallance referred to Burne-Jones as "the greatest painter the world has known since the fifteenth century". |

This antique Photogravure shows the first Cartoon made by Burne-Jones for stained glass - a commission that he received after Gabriel Rossetti first declined the work, suggesting instead that Burne-Jones should be offered the opportunity.
After viewing Burne-Jones' work, Rossetti wrote, "[Burne-]Jones has just been designing some stained glass which has driven Ruskin wild with joy: the subject is the Good Shepherd. Christ is here represented as a real Shepherd, in such dress as is fit for walking the fields and hills. He carried lost sheep on his shoulder, and it is chewing some vine leaves which are wound round his hat - a lovely idea, is it not? A loaf and bottle of wine, the Sacred Elements, hand at His girdle; and behind Him is a wonderful piece of Gothic landscape".

This antique Photogravure shows a Cartoon of another of the three stained glass designs executed by Burne-Jones for the dining-hall of Bradfield College in 1857.
As with the preceding example, the symbolism of the Pre-Raphaelite school is overt - as is the cast of countenance they affected: the set, stony stare of the eyes, the pursed-up, prim, Puritanical mouth, and the lank hair, plastered flat over the forehead.
| In this image, Burne-Jones depicts the Shulamite in the act of reclining, her head close to the door to enable her to catch the melody of her lover's endearments. "It is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, 'Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled.'" There is the "hole of the door," by which he put in his hands, that are likened, a few verses further on, to "gold rings set with beryl"; and there too are the "handles of the lock," which was opened in vain when too late, because the beloved had withdrawn himself. | |||

This particular decoration was never carried out.
The design shows Chrysaor and the magical winged horse Pegasus, both springing into being from the trunk of Medusa, whose head has just be stricken off by Perseus. The treatment of the horse is modeled after the animals in the frieze of the Parthenon.
