''The Bird Feng''

In this illustration, Dulac returns to a tale that he first illustrated in his early career - an early illustration for "The Story of the

Bird Feng" is known to have been published in 1915 for Edmund Dulac's Picture Book for the French Red Cross. At that time,

the illustration was associated with the following text:

The wonderful bird, like a fire of many colours come down from heaven, alighted

before the princess, dropping at her feet the portrait.

As in 1915, that text seems to suit the later illustration wonderfully.

For this later illustration, Dulac as prepared it in a manner that is similar to the refined Art Nouveau aesthete that came to

characterize his illustrations from the 1930s onwards.
