Mopsa the Fairy (1927)
Designs by Dugald Stewart Walker
To the left is shown a rare copy of Mopsa the Fairy by Jean Ingelow - illustrated by Dugald Walker - as published by The MacMillan Company (New York) in 1927.
This example retains the original decoratively black-stamped blue cloth cover.
On the right, we show the Title Page for this Edition, as illustrated by Dugald Walker. |
Mopsa the Fairy is a tale by Jean Ingelow, a well-regarded English writer during the Victorian age - it is, perhaps, her most
well known work.
Throughout Mopsa the Fairy, Ingelow takes the reader on a journey of pure fantasy involving a boy (Jack), his discovery
of a nest of Fairies his ride to Fairyland on an albatross, his friendship with Mopsa the Fairy and time exploring Fairyland.
In its dreamlike elements, Mopsa the Fairy is similar to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, but in contrast to that work by
Carroll, it is softer and more romantic.
Dugald Walker's illustrations for Mopsa the Fairy are gorgeous - he supplied a suite of colour, and monotone illustrations
(including chapter headings, marginalia and decorated letters) for this commission.
