Carmen (1915)
Illustrated by René Bull
To the left, we show a rare copy of the 1st Edition of Carmen holding the suite of images prepared by René Bull (that published by Hutchinson & Co. [London] in, or about, 1915).
This example retains the original decoratively gilt-stamped red cloth cover - one of the known variant bindings for the 1st Edition.
On the right, we show the Title Page complete with decorations from Bull. |
Co-published in, or about, 1915 by Hutchinson & Co (London) and Hearst's International (New York), Carmen is an
illustrated version of Prosper Mérimée's classic novella, Carmen, that was to be adapted into the famous Opera by
George Bizet.
Through his illustrated rendering - including both colour and monotone images - Bull brings Mérimée's 19th Century tale
of the beautiful gypsy and femme fatale, Carmen, to us in wonderful fashion.
Copies of Carmen as illustrated by Bull - are rare and highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Each card is
hand-finished and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope. The rear of each
card carries information about René Bull, this wonderful suite and the profiled illustration - we have left the interior
of the cards blank so that you may write your own personal message.
