Carmen (1915)

Illustrated by René Bull

 

 

 

To the left, we show a rare copy of the 1st Edition of

Carmen holding the suite of images prepared by René Bull (that published by Hutchinson & Co. [London] in, or

about, 1915).

 

This example retains the original decoratively gilt-stamped

red cloth cover - one of the known variant bindings for

the 1st Edition.

complete with decorations from Bull.

 

Co-published in, or about, 1915 by Hutchinson & Co (London) and Hearst's International (New York), Carmen

is an illustrated version of Prosper Mérimée's classic novella, Carmen, that was to be adapted into the famous

Opera by George Bizet.

 

Through his illustrated rendering - including both colour and monotone images - Bull brings Mérimée's

19th Century tale of the beautiful gypsy and femme fatale, Carmen, to us in wonderful fashion.

 

Copies of Carmen as illustrated by Bull - are rare and highly valued by collectors and enthusiasts alike.

 

 

Our Greeting Cards and Reproduction Prints 

 

We have prepared sets of 16 Greeting Cards displaying each of Bull's colour images for Carmen (1915) and on the left, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards appear. When presented on Greeting Cards, these images are prepared as tipped-in plates - in homage to the hand-crafted

approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century.

 

Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on

Ivory card stock (in the case of colour illustrations) or White card stock (in the case of monotone illustrations)

with an accompanying envelope. We have left the cards blank so that you may write your own personal

message.
