An unusual variant, this Icon signifies the incarnation
of Christ and the perpetual watchfulness and mindfulness of God - who, like the
Sun, illuminates all the land. Typographically, the Icon is sometimes classified
as a Mother of God Icon - celebrated on 15 August - and is related,
iconographically, to the Unburnt Thornbush Mother of God type.
On the Icon, Christ is depicted as Christ Immanuel -
the pre-existent Logos - at the centre of a circle from which four star-like
rays extend outward. The symbols of the Four Evangelists appear at the rays'
terminating points. The central Sun-like dias on which Christ Immanuel is placed
has a face - sometimes with a number of eyes - surrounded by a ring containing
Seraphim with the Mother of God between Christ Immanuel and Lord Saboth (God the
Father depicted as an old man).

This Icon
depicts Archangel Michael - whose name means "he who is like the Lord".
Archangel Michael is also variously described as "commander of the army of the
Lord", "one of the chief princes" and "the great prince". As leader of the
Lord's army against Satan, Michael was victorious and is thus, the Patron Saint
of Warriors.
In early
Russia, Archangel Michael was considered the most reliable helper in military
matters - many churches were dedicated to him and princes setting out on
campaigns would look to him for Intercession as a matter of course. Dimitry
Donskoi, for example, before setting out on his campaign in a decisive battle
against the Tartar-Mongols was said to have gone "into the Church of Saint
Michael the leader of the Heavenly Host and beat his brow against his holy
image".
