St Jerome in his Study
Illustrated by Albrecht Dürer
This image is understood to have been prepared in, or about, 1514 and is widely recognized among Dürer's masterworks.
Knackfuss (Durer: H Grevel & Co, London; 1900) describes the illustration thus:
Altogether absorbed in his work, the great father of the church sits in his comfortable
scholar's chamber; we feel the genial warmth which the sunlight brings into the room,
subdued as it is by the panes of bottle-glass in the casement; the Saint's lion rests in
peaceful slumber, with a little dog beside it.
