For Contes des pays de neige, Ségur had the opportunity to interpret classic tales from a variety of authors, including Arthur Ransome, the Brother's Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen and Henri Troyat. The Russian folktales described by Arthur Ransome included "La fiancée de l'hiver", "Le chat qui devint chef forestier", "Le Prince Ivan, le bébé sorcière et la petit sœur du soleil", "Baba Yaga", and "Alenouchka et son frère" and "La petite fille de la neige". Those tales from the Brother Grimm within the collection included "Jorinda et Joringel", "Les trois petits nains de la forêt", and "La petite vieille", while the final two tales were drawn from the work of Hans Christian Andersen ("Le reine des neiges") and Henri Troyat ("L'ame de Mélitone").
Ségur's suite of illustrations, on this occasion, included major colour and monotone images, in addition to minor monotone images.
Her colour illustrations, in particular, are characterized by an palate dominated by earthy and muted tones, but as with her previous post-War suites, her images are thoughtfully descriptive of scenes within the selected tales and display her distinctive style established for Alice au pays des merveilles in 1949. |
